Edges

An orchid, the edges of its petals highlighted by sunlight and the rest in shadow.

Generally speaking, it’s best to have a slightly overcast sky when you’re taking pictures. It helps you avoid harsh shadows, which tend to be unflattering.

But sometimes… well, sometimes those harsh shadows can make for some pretty awesome pictures. I happen to love this one, and it only came about because of some strong sunlight one evening last week. It was streaming through my living room window perfectly, bathing my orchid in a warm, yellow light. Anything behind the orchid was in shadow.

I got some wonderful pictures because of it, and I’ll be sharing some more of them next weekend. This one, though, is easily my favourite of the batch. And it might just be a favourite overall.
