I try a lot of new recipes throughout the year. Sometimes they’re recipes I’ve made up, other times they’re recipes that have been perfected by home chefs and bakers across the internet. Either way, I enjoy the experience of trying something new.
When I find a recipe I really enjoy, I try to come back here and share it with all of you. I didn’t do that quite as often as I would have liked in 2017, but I did get a few recipes and recipe reviews up throughout the year.
Today, I want to share with you my favourite five from the bunch.
I reviewed Marla Meridith’s Blackberry Barley Breakfast Bake back in October, but it would make a great breakfast year-round. This breakfast bake changed how I think about cooking with barley. I now have a goal of using the grain more often, particularly in recipes that may traditionally call for oatmeal.
I’m still in love with my Strawberries and Cream Cupcakes. These little darlings came out perfectly. The sweetness of the strawberries is balanced out by the creaminess of the cupcake batter, and it’s all made even better if you top it off with a bit of whipped cream frosting.
Who doesn’t love a good snickerdoodle? I reviewed this version from Sally’s Baking Addiction in May, though I’d tried them once before that. The cookies are soft, sweet, and cinnamony–exactly what a snickerdoodle should be.
This one’s another one of my recipes–and, incidentally, another one with strawberries. This Strawberry-Swirled Lemon Loaf is absolutely perfect for spring. The strawberries add a nice pop to the loaf, setting off the sourness of the lemon without making either overwhelming.
This pasta, you guys! Jo Cooks’ Rigatoni in Blush Sauce with Chicken and Bacon was easily my favourite pasta from 2017. I reviewed it in September, and, though I haven’t had a chance to make another batch since then, it’s one that’ll be making another appearance in my lunch rotation soon. The way the tomato and hot sauce play against the sour cream and mozza is just incredible.
