Strawberries and chocolate

Strawberry and chocolate pie

They make such a good combination, don’t you think? This pie seemed to take that a step further, though I can’t say for sure. I made it for a fundraiser at work, so I didn’t actually get to try it myself.

Well, not in its entirety, at least. There was chocolate custard left after I filled the pie, so my family and I indulged in that a little bit.

I’ll have to make this again sometime, so that I can try a piece for myself. I’ll make sure to post a recipe review when I do. In the meantime, if you’re curious, you can find the recipe over on Love and Olive Oil.

Recipe: Peach Hand Pies

Pie Dough

Who doesn’t love pie?

Actually, scratch that. There’s a girl I work with who doesn’t even like pie, never mind love it. But you know what she did like when I brought them in to work? These Peach Hand Pies.

And do you know what you’ll like about these Peach Hand Pies? The way they taste, of course, but also the fact that they’re fairly easy to make. Yes, they take a fair bit of time, but it’s time spent on easy tasks, I swear.

Favourite five: Recipes I tried for the first time in 2017

I try a lot of new recipes throughout the year. Sometimes they’re recipes I’ve made up, other times they’re recipes that have been perfected by home chefs and bakers across the internet. Either way, I enjoy the experience of trying something new.

When I find a recipe I really enjoy, I try to come back here and share it with all of you. I didn’t do that quite as often as I would have liked in 2017, but I did get a few recipes and recipe reviews up throughout the year.

Today, I want to share with you my favourite five from the bunch.

One Little Project's Red Velvet Cheesecake Brownies

If you’ve read many of my recipes and recipe reviews, you’ve probably picked up on a trend: I tend to lean toward relatively simple recipes. If it can be made in one or two bowls, with only a few ingredients, I’m all over it.

That said, sometimes I love to go all out with a recipe. Take One Little Project’s Red Velvet Cheesecake Brownies as an example. While it isn’t a difficult recipe, I don’t really consider it a simple one, either. The name alone is a mouthful, and you’re going to need quite a few ingredients and multiple bowls.

But you know what? The end result is totally worth it.

Recipe: Strawberries and Cream Cupcakes

Strawberries and Cream Cupcakes

I’m not gonna lie: strawberries are one of my go-to fruits. I turn to them regularly, whether it’s to eat them as they are or to use them in a recipe of some sort. You don’t have to look far for proof on that last point; just check out the “strawberry” and “strawberries” tags here on my blog.

In these Strawberry and Cream Cupcakes, however, the strawberry flavour is just a little more subtle than you might expect. It’s definitely there, it’s just not overpowering. Instead, it’s nicely balanced by a soft, creamy vanilla base–perfect for a light-tasting dessert.
