To be honest, I’m not entirely sure if The Raising belongs in the adult category. Goodreads has it as Young Adult, but that doesn’t feel right, either. Most of the characters are in college, and the others are adults that have some connection to the college. So I’m thinking, maybe a cross between adult and New Adult?
But regardless to which category the novel belongs, The Raising is definitely something worth reading.
This novel had me hooked from the beginning. A young college girl – loved by just about everyone – dies, but seems to be appearing around campus a year later? Sounds cool. But what makes it is that it didn’t end up going at all the way I expected it to.
But don’t worry – I won’t reveal the twist here. I’ll just tell you that it’s good. Good enough that I had a hard time putting down the novel as I was reading it.
Of course, other aspects of the novel are worth reading, as well. Kasischke wrote her characters really well, and I found them to be both believable and three-dimensional. Some were exceedingly cruel, and others easily gained my sympathy.
But, truly, the plot is the reason why I’m recommending The Raising. It had me hooked, and I’m sure others will feel the same way.
