Is it already time for a sensational September? Where did that come from? And if it’s really September already, why hasn’t it cooled off enough for me to wear comfy sweaters?

Well, lack of comfy sweater-weather aside, September is still shaping up to be a pretty good month. I accomplished two out of my three goals for August, and I feel optimistic about the ones I have planned for September. Plus, September is my birthday month. That always adds an extra little bit of excitement, don’t you think?

Before we get too far into September, though, let’s take a look back at August.

August’s goals

  1. Finish V&L revisions.
  2. Finish BC revisions
  3. Take a writing course or attend a workshop

I’m extremely happy to tell you that I can finally cross that first goal off my list. I finished my V&L rewrite this month, just under the wire. Admittedly, though, I’m still not happy with the manuscript. It’s better than it was, but still not where I want it to be. I’m going to shelve it for now. I can always go back to it later, when I have a better idea of how to fix it.

That third goal is the other one I can scratch off as complete. I didn’t technically attend a course or workshop, but I did watch a couple of webinars. So, a bit of a different format, but still a good learning opportunity. I’m counting that as a win.

Unfortunately, I didn’t quite get my BC revisions finished. The reason for this came down largely to timing. I relied on setting my lunch breaks aside for this work, but I found that often didn’t work out. Sometimes it was because I ended up not actually having the time at lunch, and sometimes because I needed more of a break than that. The revision is close to being finished, though, and I expect to have it done within a week or so.

So, how am I planning on following up on that progress?

September’s goals

  1. Start revisions on CD
  2. Get at least one short story ready for submission
  3. Start querying BC

It’s an interesting list this time, isn’t it? One is fairly new to the blog, and another is kind of a big deal for me.

Let’s start with the new-ish one. CD is the manuscript I started last NaNoWriMo, and I finished first draft in the new year. This first round of revision is going to be pretty major. It’ll involve a lot of reorganizing, reworking of characters, and, well, a whole lot of rewriting. It’s most certainly not the sort of thing I expect to get finished in a month. I’m not even sure how much I can expect to get done in a month, which is why my goal is just to start on it.

Getting a short story ready for submission is pretty straight-forward. I have a couple that I’ve been working on, and I know where I want to take them in terms of edits. There’s also a contest I want to enter, and a couple of magazines I may submit to. It’d be great if I could get one, maybe two, stories ready to go for those.

Now, querying BC. That’s the one that feels like kind of a big deal–for me, at any rate. I tried querying V&L once, but it, clearly, wasn’t ready. BC feels like it will be, after this round of revisions. I won’t give you a lot of details on how the querying process goes, but I will let you know about any big news, or if I decide to take a break from it.

So, that’s how my September looks so far. How about yours?
