Monthly update: January 2017

So it’s already 2017, huh? Last year went by much quicker than I’d anticipated, especially those last couple of months. It’s nice to be starting a new year, though. It provides the perfect opportunity to refocus and move forward.

But before we do that–and before I tell you my plans for these new monthly updates–let’s take a quick look back at 2016.

The blog

Did you know that my blog does a bit better as each year passes? It’s true. While I may not get the most visits, I do get more each year.

Sometimes, too, I’m surprised by the year’s most popular posts. The most popular post that went up in 2016, for example, was “Introducing myself to pitch wars”. That isn’t entirely surprising, since it was linked to from a variety of places. What was more surprising, though, was that the most popular post overall was a recipe review for Company’s Coming’s Pumpkin Muffins. I’m not entirely sure why that one is so popular, but I’m happy it has proven to be helpful.

I also managed to get into a good groove of posting at least twice per week, barring some difficult stretches. I’m hoping to keep that up over the next year, and, if all goes according to plan, eventually move to a schedule of three posts per week.

My writing

I’ve made some pretty good progress in my writing over the past year. What I’m most happy with is the amount of revision I’ve done. I queried V&L a bit, before putting that process on hold; I’ve discovered something that needs fixing in the manuscript, though I haven’t quite figured out how to fix it. While working that out, though, I finished the majority of my edits on C&C (or Baking Chaos, as I’ve now named it). I’m hoping I’ll be able to query that one out in the next couple of months.

My other writing-related hopes for this year include getting some short stories published, and finishing and editing the first draft of my NaNoWriMo novel. I’ll keep you posted on how I’m doing on those fronts as news progresses.

My plans moving forward

Okay, so I’ve already talked about most of my plans, but there are a couple of other points I want to touch on.

This post, for example, is the first in what I hope will be a series. I want to update you on my writing and other projects over the next year, and I think monthly updates are the best way to go about that. Although, I may throw in a couple of other, smaller updates along the way, should any big news warrant it. Regardless, you’ll see a monthly update post come up the first Sunday of each month.

I also want to expand on my photography projects a bit. I’ve joined Litsy (I’m signed up under the name “MirandaB016”, if you’re interested in following me over there), and I want to post there more often. That said, books aren’t the only subjects I want to photograph more. I’d like to get some more creative shots in general, be they of food, Cookie, or just subjects I happen to come across.

January in particular

I do have a few particular goals for January. Here are the ones I want to be update you on come February:

  1. Finish the first draft of Courting Death, my NaNoWriMo novel.
  2. Write and edit a new short story.
  3. Post to Instagram at least once per week.
  4. Post to Litsy at least once every two weeks.

Those should be doable, don’t you think?

I think that about covers everything I wanted to update you on for now. How about you? Do you have any goals you’re working toward that you’d like to share?
