Wednesday links: H.E.A.R.T. and comps

I love regularly reading tips and advice articles in certain subjects — particularly writing and publishing. I don’t always need the information right then, but I know that it’ll eventually come in handy. Or at least, I hope it will.

I know there are a lot of other people out there who feel the same way I do, but sometimes it can be difficult to find every useful advice article that’s out there. So I thought I’d bring you a few.

Here are the tips and advice articles that jumped out at me the most over the past week.

1. Professional Authors Need H.E.A.R.T. — What It Takes to Make It In The Digital Age of Publishing, from Kristen Lamb: There are a lot of things you need in your corner if you want to become a professional author. But there’s five in particular that Kristen Lamb focused on in this article. Excerpt: “Those in writing for the wrong reasons (make a quick buck) abound. Some succeed but they’re rare. Most of us do this writing thing because of LOVE.”

2. The Importance of Comps, from WOW! Women On Writing: When you’re querying agents or publishers, many of them will ask for comps to your work. But choosing a comp title isn’t as simple as picking up another book in the same genre. Excerpt: “The first time I heard the expression “comps” at a writer’s conference, I had no idea how important that word was. Or even what “comps” meant.”
